Lake Towada

Lake Towada is a caldera lake formed by volcanic activity that began about 200,000 years ago. A caldera lake refers to something formed by storing rainwater over a long period of time in a depression caused by an eruption. Lake Nakako, which is sandwiched between the Mikura Peninsula and the Nakayama Peninsula, shows a depth of 327 meters, making it the 3rd deepest in Japan. You can feel the tremendous energy of the eruption that gouged through the earth and the length of time it took to form.
